Sairat(meaning passion and zeal in marathi) is a Marathi film directed by Nagraj manjule, a two time National Award Winning director for his previous films Pistulya and Fandry. Sairat is his first Main Stream film and no wonder he carved this beautiful and heart wrenching epic. The first half is Lively, Colorful, Vibrant and full of Mad, Crazy Love that blossoms in teen age between an Adamant, Courageous Royal En-field Bullet Riding girl named Archie and Boyish, honest, good looking, madly in love teenager named Parshya. Whereas the second half runs in a serious tone which is heart breaking, soul crushing and is devoid of all glamour and glory in contrast to the other magical and fairy tale first half. It is about the cruel reality of eloping and what it actually means to live together and Love alone cannot feed one’s stomach. The film is literally like two films. But the actual blow comes in the climax. I have literally experienced a pin drop silence in the theater as the audience walk out, as if the director has pierced a sword right into their hearts, and the effect is so real as we have connected with the story and traveled with it for nearly 170 minutes. It hits you so hard that you cant take it off your head and the sadness you have experienced is so significant that you start cursing the caste system in India and this is how the director has succeeded in his task of making people think.
The Music is the Soul of the Film. It is undoubtedly the best album I have listened to in recent days. The Music was composed by duo Ajay-Atul. The Soundtrack includes western classical pieces recorded in Hollywood,California,a first for an Indian film. The Songs are so beautifully Shot that they bring back your long last memories of your teenage love and that makes the first half so heart warming, eye pleasing and foot tapping. A sixty year old Grand Father sitting next to me was tapping his hands and feet according to the beat in every song , Do I need to say more? The Back ground Music is breath taking and the Cinematography is the feast to the eyes. The Camera has unequivocally and aesthetically captured the country Side natural beauty and the dark Phases in the Second half. Credit must be given to the Debutante lead pair Rinku Rajguru as Archie and Akash Tosar as Parshya. They lived their roles and you cant take your eyes off them as the film unfolds. Rinku has bagged National award-Special mention from GOI for her role in the film. The Story is quite old but the story telling and screen play is quite interesting and is not far from reality and that is how the Director has managed to make the audience glue their eyes to the screens for almost 3 hours, a pretty long time as for today’s standards.Hats off to the Director Nagraj Manjule. Some times you just cant put your emotions into words, and I dont think I am doing full justice to an art form what I have had experienced back there. So I recommend you to watch this epic to praise his mastery, sairat for film making and the way he molds his stories on Social evils.
Here are few glimpses of Sairat to tease you all.
P.S: I happened to watch Nagraj Manjule’s Fandry the day after, and I was literally moved to tears. The film deserves a standing ovation..!!
